For parents

Dear parents, welcome to Chinese School Almere.

So that your child is safe, drop-off and pick-up run smoothly and lessons can go ahead in good order, please read the following carefully. If anything is unclear, get in touch.

Daily routine and lesson times

To give the children a proper Chinese-language environment, we ask parents and children to speak Chinese as much as possible inside the school.

Pupils bring a school bag, textbook, pencil and eraser every week. (The programming class needs your own laptop or iPad.)

The first lesson runs 50 minutes and the second 45 minutes, with a 15-minute break between them. Please send your child with healthy food and water. Children who have both a morning and an afternoon class should bring lunch, which can be eaten in the ground-floor lounge while they wait.

The school photographs pupils during lessons and activities. These photographs are used on the school website, the WeChat channel and in other publicity. If you do not want your child photographed, or the photographs used, please tell the school.

Drop-off, pick-up and conduct

1. Children in morning classes come in between 9:50 and 10:00; children in afternoon classes between 11:50 and 12:10. After that, parents should leave the building or wait in the lounge.

2. Once lessons start the door is closed and pupils cannot come and go.

3. While at school, children are asked to:

   • not drop litter in the building or the classroom;
   • treat classmates with respect and not bully anyone;
   • use stationery for work, not for play;
   • look after shared property and not touch teaching equipment unasked;
   • keep the toilets clean and not waste toilet paper;
   • take care on the stairs — no climbing on the bannister, no running or pushing;
   • not chase or scuffle in the corridors;
   • close doors quietly and be well-mannered;
   • wait after class rather than rushing out before a parent arrives.

4. Collect your child from the classroom, on time. Children may only leave once parent and teacher have acknowledged each other.

5. Please avoid sending children in roller skates or on scooters. If unavoidable, leave them in the corridor outside the classroom; they may not be used at school.

6. If your child cannot attend because of illness or for any other reason, tell the teacher in advance.

Classrooms and building

The school rents its premises. Please help the teachers by reminding your child not to draw or write on the desks, and certainly not on the display boards. Take care of signage, display panels, lounge furniture and other fittings.

Parking

Parking beneath the school is free for the first half hour and there are enough spaces. If you stay longer, pay promptly or extend the time in the app. Park only in permitted bays and never on the pavement, so that neighbours are not inconvenienced. (Please note the reserved accessible bays.)

Conduct rules

For pupils who deliberately damage or destroy school property, or who ignore the teacher, persist in talking loudly, scuffle, or otherwise disrupt the lesson, the school follows the conduct rules commonly used in Dutch primary education.

Classes and fees

We teach in small groups with a limited number of places. If too few pupils enrol, the school decides whether a course goes ahead.

Fees for the current semester are collected during the enrolment period. As a non-profit foundation we aim simply to break even. If you have paid and your child leaves partway through, please give at least three weeks’ notice. Within one month of lessons starting, half the fee is refunded; after a month, no refund is given (for elective courses, no refund once the course has begun). No refund is given where a pupil is excluded for a serious breach of the conduct rules.

Homework and support at home

Improving the children’s Chinese takes teachers and parents working together. Please speak Chinese at home as much as you can, and help your child with their Chinese each week. We also encourage parents to share what works in the WeChat group.

Events

The school holds celebrations at special points in the year, such as before the summer holidays and at Chinese New Year. Times and places are announced separately in the WeChat group.

Third-party liability insurance

We strongly recommend that all parents take out third-party liability insurance (aansprakelijkheidsverzekering) for their child.

If you have questions or objections to any of the above, please contact your child’s teacher. Once lessons begin we assume you accept these terms. Thank you for your understanding and support.
